Auroral Observations at the Alaska Agricultural

چکیده

Description of stations.--The two points of observation used for the auroral work are located a little over fourteen miles apart. One, designated as Station 1, is on the college campus: The other, Station 2, is on the Richardson Highway in a southeasterly direction from Station 1. The choice of an outlying station is limited as transportation must be reasonably easy. There are only two possible directions in which the outlying station can be situated. A northerly one and the one chosen. Aside from the direction Station 2 is well located. It has a clear view in all directions. it is easily accessible xcept in the most severe weather

First light from a kilometer-baseline Scintillation Auroral GPS Array

We introduce and analyze the first data from an array of closely spaced Global Positioning System (GPS) scintillation receivers established in the auroral zone in late 2013 to measure spatial and temporal variations in L band signals at 100-1000 m and subsecond scales. The seven receivers of the Scintillation Auroral GPS Array (SAGA) are sited at Poker Flat Research Range, Alaska. The receivers...

Observations of amplitude saturation in ELF/VLF wave generation by modulated HF heating of the auroral electrojet

[1] We present detailed observations of the onset of amplitude saturation in ELF/VLF waves generated via modulated HF heating of naturally-forming, large-scale current systems, such as the auroral electrojet. Broadband ELF/VLF measurements at a ground-based receiver located near the High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) HF transmitter in Gakona, Alaska, exhibit variations in si...

Interhemispheric asymmetries in the occurrence of magnetically conjugate sub-auroral polarisation streams

Earthward injections of energetic ions and electrons mark the onset of magnetospheric substorms. In the inner magnetosphere (L∼4), the energetic ions drift westward and the electrons eastward, thereby enhancing the equatorial ring current. Wave-particle interactions can accelerate these particles to radiation belt energies. The ions are injected slightly closer to Earth in the pre-midnight sect...

DEMETER observations of ELF waves injected with the HAARP HF transmitter

[1] Modulated HF heating of the auroral electrojet is used to inject ELF signals into the magnetosphere that are observed on the low altitude DEMETER spacecraft. The HF heater is a component of the High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) facility in Gakona, Alaska, (located at L 4.9). Simultaneous observations of all six components of the ELF electromagnetic fields on the DEMETER...

On the altitude of the ELF/VLF source region generated during beatwave HF heating experiments

[1] Modulated high frequency (HF, 3–10 MHz) heating of the ionosphere in the presence of the auroral electrojet currents is an effective method for generating extremely low frequency (ELF, 3–3000 Hz) and very low frequency (VLF, 3–30 kHz) radio waves. The amplitudes of ELF/VLF waves generated in this manner depend sensitively on the auroral electrojet current strength, which varies with time. I...
